24 Hours In Macau

Lying just 65 km west of Hong Kong, Macau (or Macao) maybe known to many as the Asia's Gambling capital or has long been referred to as the "Las Vegas of the East", but if gambling does not interest you, its swanky architecture, Macau's Historic Centre, and a travel back its Mediterranean charm will.

Although a day is not nearly enough to take in all of Macau's attraction, Macau still makes a great day-trip, not to mention you can also enjoy everything in Macau for free!

Itinerary and tips below

Currency in Macau?
Macanese Patacas (MOP), but Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) is widely accepted.
Exchange rate: 1 MOP = 1 HKD
Tip: Avoid 1000 HKD bill
Please note that MOP is not accepted in Hong Kong, be sure to spend them before your Hong Kong trip, or request for a HKD during payment.
How to get to Macau?
  • PLANE
  • FERRY (an hour from Hong Kong)
Those who are travelling from HKIA (Hong Kong International Airport) to Macau are exempted from HKIA Immigration formalities.
  1. Passengers should proceed straight to E2 Transfer Area (Level 5, Terminal 1) ferry counter
  2. Purchase ferry tickets (in case you haven't booked yet)
  3. At the same counter, present your flight luggage tag, they’ll call the porter service to pick up your luggage and send directly to the Skypier.
HKIA TurboJet Airport Routes Check-In Counter Closing Time:
60 minutes before sailing time (with checked baggage)
30 minutes before sailing time (without)
There are TWO FERRY OPERATORS:
  1. TurboJet (red)
  2. Cotai Water (blue)
  1. Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal - Cotai area
  2. Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal - Macau Peninsula area

How to get around Macau?

Buses and taxis are the major modes of public transport in Macau. The best way to travel around Macau is to use the Free Hotel Shuttle Bus Services (yes, even if you don't have hotel reservations, nor plan of gambling). Most hotels (four-starred or above) and gaming venues operate their shuttle bus service between the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, Taipa Ferry Terminal or Portas do Cerco (Macau's border to mainland China) and their premises.
When on the buses, each stop is displayed on an electronic screen on the bus, with an automated announcement in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Portuguese and English.
From Macau Ferry Terminal, we hop on Venetian Hotel, drop by Venetian, and walked our way to our hotel - Hotel Taipa Square.

"Bus Nos. 21, 21A, 25, 26 and 26A run between the Peninsular and islands of Taipa and Coloane
Bus Nos. 11, 22, 28A, 33 and 34 run between the Macau Peninsular and island of Taipa
API is a special line plying between the airport on the island of Taipa and the Peninsular"

How to save time and money? Hop on free shuttle buses, enjoy Macau's free food sampling and attractions!
  • Study your itinerary, or your hotel shuttle service, and even public services. Walk, walk, and walk.
  • HOP ON FREE HOTEL SHUTTLE SERVICES: Again, they offer bus services for free. All you need to do is to study their route.
  • FREE LUGGAGE SERVICES: You may drop your things even if you’re not staying in that particular hotel.
  • Optional: Public Buses: Upon entry, you'll notice an electronic card reader, and a payment box just beside it. You either scan your MacauPass (pre-paid travel / payment card), or place your payment in the coin box. BRING EXACT AND CORRECT PAYMENT, the driver only observe whether you're paying enough, and they will never give you change (same goes in Hong Kong).
  • Enjoy Macau's beautifully constructed hotels, and their sensational entertainment.
  • Indulge your taste buds, FREE CUT OUT SAMPLES — Koi Kei Bakery offers generous free sampling, and they're everywhere in Macau.
  • Set off your trip with the iconic heritage landmarks and be amazed by the inspiring history and cultural relics.
Where EAST meets WEST:
Macau is known by many as the Las Vegas of the East for its many casinos. More so, Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it constituted the last remaining European colony in Asia.

Senado Square (Largo do Senado) is located in the central area of Macau city. It is one of the top four squares in Macau, and is listed as a part of the Historic Center of Macau UNESCO World Heritage.

St. Dominic's Church (Igreja de São Domingos) sits at the apex of Macau's city sqaure, the church was constructed by three Spanish Dominican priests in 1587 and was placed on the World Heritage List in July 2005, and became the 31st world heritage site of China.

Of course, don't leave without having Macau's unique gastronomic delights. The most talked about dishes / snacks are the Portuguese egg tarts, pork chop buns, and beef jerky.

The most famous landmark in Macau, the Ruins of St Paul’s (front façade and grand stairs) is what’s left of St Paul’s church. Built in 1580, the church caught fire in 1595 and 1601, before a typhoon in 1835 saw it fall victim to a fire for the third time.

Monte Fort, just a few minutes walk from Ruins of St. Paul. Whilst, Macau Museum in Monte Fortress is the best place to learn about Macau's history and the Portuguese era.

Eiffel Tower Macao
